Christ Church Uniting, Worship: Church Open 10.00am – 3.00pm Minister of the Word Linked Web Sites: Christ Church has many and varied aspects to its community life: Creative and encouraging Sunday Worship for the renewal of heart and mind. We are theologically progressive and arts appreciative, as we seek to express a compassionate spirituality. We are proudly a Uniting Church community. Seasonal Discussion / Study Groups seek to make meaningful connections between the Christian faith and the many complex issues of our times. Pastoral Partners aims to ensure that all of the community are well cared for. Particular attention is given to newcomers and those without established friendship or family support networks. Community Life is an annual program of social activities that enables the community to informally enjoy one another’s company. Our program seeks to cater for all ages and interests. ‘Luncheon’ Groups meet regularly at various times in homes around a shared meal. They are an ideal entry point for newcomers to our community. Children’s Ministry is offered through weekly participation, a monthly activity gathering that includes a creative part in the worship time. Music: Our Worship seeks a balance of styles
and instrumentation. Younger and older are always encouraged to participate.
The Effective Living Centre On a weekly basis, Christ Church seeks to engage the wider community through the Effective Living Centre. Our office, which is staffed by a coordinator and volunteers, is open Monday, Wednesday and Friday between 10.00am and 3.00pm. We administer a good number of community engagement programmes, such as: Positive Parenting: Professionally facilitated courses are run for parents and activities are provided for the whole family at Easter and Christmas. Information of the current year’s programme can be obtained from the office or via our website: www.effectiveliving.org Social Issues: We provide forums for sharing of analysis and concerns about social justice, as well as encouraging practical hands-on support for various community groups. Sacred and Creative: ELC continues to host nationally and internationally renowned speakers who help deepen our thinking and further our spiritual practice. We also encourage budding artists through such events as Poet’s Corner and our widely acclaimed annual Artist in Residence program. Progressive Christianity Network, SA provides educational programs and forums for people to freely engage the questions, doubts and hopes of their own faith experience, all in an atmosphere of mutual respect and acceptance. Through the Effective Living Centre, Christ Church is an active member of the Mission Resourcing Network of the Uniting Church in SA. Christ Church is a part of the Uniting Church in Australia – formed by the union of the Congregational, Methodist and Presbyterian churches in 1977. The Christ Church Congregation began as the Unley Methodist Church and some of the tributes to our history can be found in the stained glass windows and memorials dotted around the building. The current building was designed to provide for this congregation as well as for Parkin-Wesley College on whose ground it was built. Parkin-Wesley College is now a part of the South Australian College of Divinity at Brooklyn Park and the Eldercare Complex now adjoins the church property. This change gave us the opportunity to establish greater links with the local community and use our building more creatively through the Effective Living Centre, established in 1998, which is used for education and other activities. It is a place where people come to be “empowered in the fullness and celebration of life”.
